Welcome to January! I have to say we are having a great start to the new year.
Math- Mastering your multiplication facts is so important in early mathematics because it will help you in skills later on such as division and even algebra. We are practicing in class with games such as Baseball Multiplication, Multiplication Top It, Name That Number, and old favorites like Around the World, and Flash Cards. You can help your child at home by encouraging fact practice in the car, practicing on the iPhone or iPad, or by clicking the orange links above.

Listening Comprehension:
We have been reading the book The Tale of Despereaux by Katie DiCamillo together as a class and are looking forward to finishing it this week. We have learned new words such as destiny, grungy, and perfidy. We will be watching parts of the movie so I can model the comparing and contrasting and do a think aloud so the children have a clear idea of they will do for their book reports. If for any reason you do not want your child watching clips of this movie, please email me as soon as possible and your child will be given an individual assignment.

Books Projects for January Skill: Compare and Contrast I am so excited to see the transformation when third graders begin choosing and enjoying chapter books, recommending them to others, or starting a new series. This month I had the students choose novels that were also turned into movies. This is a great way to assess if they are in fact visualizing the story and are able to hold onto main ideas from the book. More often than not I find that the book are by far is better than the movies. I am interested to see if they feel the same. | Team Time (January 22nd) Mrs. Silva and I are planning a unit together on biographies and important African American figures in history. This unit will incorporate standards from second and third grade social studies, language arts, and speaking and listening standards. The students will have choices on their assessments and will be using technology to create 3 slides on a PowerPoint or a Prezi. They be graded using a rubric. Science Solids, Liquids, and Gases have been the talk of third grade. We are incorporating studies of the human body by diving into discussions of muscles (solids), and the digestive system (solids, liquids, and much to their delight gases). We will continue to explore the scientific process and do experiments in the classroom this week. |
Charlotte's Web
I am spinning with excitement about starting Charlotte's Web with this group of kids! I have been talking with our art teacher about doing some integrated art lessons with our book! We will be building our vocabulary, acting out scenes, practicing all of our reading skills we have learned up until this point of the year and much more. I love using this time to listen to music at different parts of the book and taking the time to match our feelings about the section with the music.
