Welcome to January! I have to say we are having a great start to the new year. Math- Mastering your multiplication facts is so important in early mathematics because it will help you in skills later on such as division and even algebra. We are practicing in class with games such as Baseball Multiplication, Multiplication Top It, Name That Number, and old favorites like Around the World, and Flash Cards. You can help your child at home by encouraging fact practice in the car, practicing on the iPhone or iPad, or by clicking the orange links above. Listening Comprehension: We have been reading the book The Tale of Despereaux by Katie DiCamillo together as a class and are looking forward to finishing it this week. We have learned new words such as destiny, grungy, and perfidy. We will be watching parts of the movie so I can model the comparing and contrasting and do a think aloud so the children have a clear idea of they will do for their book reports. If for any reason you do not want your child watching clips of this movie, please email me as soon as possible and your child will be given an individual assignment.
Charlotte's Web
I am spinning with excitement about starting Charlotte's Web with this group of kids! I have been talking with our art teacher about doing some integrated art lessons with our book! We will be building our vocabulary, acting out scenes, practicing all of our reading skills we have learned up until this point of the year and much more. I love using this time to listen to music at different parts of the book and taking the time to match our feelings about the section with the music. Hello everyone, I wanted to tell you about a great opportunity for your children to read free books on their electronic devices! It is called The Ohio ebook Project. All you have to do is sign in with your library card number. Easy, simple, and free. I am so excited about the quality of literature your children are interested in reading. We really are a community of readers! I have used the eBook Project myself for books. If you want something new you can get on a waiting list. You can use this for your Kindle, computer, PDF, and Overdrive Readers. If you would like help setting this up feel free to contact me or drop in! Happy Reading :) click here We spent time in the Tinker Lab this week experimenting with solids, liquids, and gases. Check out the bulletin board in front of the Spanish room, it shows how molecules are tightly packed for solids, spread out for liquids, and way far apart for gases. We did a movement activity in the classroom during movement time so the children could move their bodies become the molecules! Sid the Science Kid showed us how food turns from a solid to a liquid in our stomach and then we compared and contrasted non-fiction text to support our findings. Whew, it was a busy and exciting full week in third grade!
