The third and fourth graders are seeing dollar signs this month as our budget project continues. The project started with a big question, "How is our money organized?" Well, ask any student and they will tell you that the initial cost of buying a pet is a lot more than they bargained for. Vet bills, food costs, and the price of a good trainer has pushed some of these pet owners into the red! We just finished calculating monthly costs and will conclude with yearly costs and final findings in the next two weeks.

OAA Tests The Reading test will be on Monday. The Math test will be on Wednesday. Our make up day will be on Friday. Parents, Please follow these tips for a great OAA week.
"Can I do more than one?" asked Jansen. "I'm reading about an incident."
"I found this paper in my dad's office." " I found your mom's name!" The chatter continues as we read and summarize current events. So why spend our time doing this? Well according to Sam Kime, " We need to keep up with current events so we know about laws so we don't break them. We need to see these events and think how we would feel if they happened to us." "Thank goodness no one was injured," Kenny said as he shared an article with Sam. For a virtual owl pellet experience please visit http://www.kidwings.com/owlpellets/flash/v4/index.htm
Spanish Spotlight Our students have been working very hard on their owl projects and have made some great observations! Did you know the wingspan of an owl is about half of it's height? Mrs. Bishop has been teaching the students (and to be honest, myself) about adjectives in Spanish and how to ask and answer a question such as "Whose gloves are these?" ¿De quién son estos guantes? This purposeful integration has made both projects more meaningful and memorable for the students.
BIG FOX Graphic Organizer
This is a tool for helping students understand nonfiction that can be used as a pre-reading/during-reading strategy to orient the reader to the topic. Credit to ODE What an exciting week it has been! Today, the third graders presented their Fanciful Tale reports and I was just beaming as I realized just how much they have grown since August. I saw paragraphs of writing, true knowledge of difficult text, and even sculptures or art work to go along with the reports. We are moving into non-fiction as we march on through March. I have also posted the new word study or spelling choice menu on my blog. Jansen, Madison, and I were also invited to go to Richland Newhope for a lunch and to meet Miss. Ohio and Miss. Wheelchair Ohio. What an amazing memory for students to have. If you don't know a lot of Richland Newhope you can learn more by clicking here: http://www.rnewhope.org/. Do you know a person who has made a difference in the life of a person with a developmental disability? If so click here to nominate them: http://www.rnewhope.org/HeroesWithHeart/ This weekend I will be traveling with other staff members to Cleveland for a two day conference! I am excited about this opportunity and will come back filled with great ideas. I am truly so lucky to have a job that is fun, challenging, and rewarding! |
